What to Consider When Building a Custom Wine Cellar
There are so many reasons wine enthusiasts choose to start, and maintain, a collection. Whether as an investment, for entertaining purposes, or to facilitate a hobby, a well-designed and built custom wine cellar protects valuable bottles, and puts them on display in stunning fashion.
With many things to consider before you begin to design your cellar, and start your custom wine cellar construction, there are several important points to make informed decisions on:
Choosing a location within your home or property: Preferably somewhere cool, without natural light or vibrations. Basements are preferred but if you don’t have one, pantries or under stair locations also work well.
Cooling for the space: The temperature wine is stored at is crucial to maintaining its quality. There are options for ducted or through-wall units, the choice depending on the size and location of the room. We do a thermal load calculation of the room to help decide which unit is best.
Ensure the room is properly sealed and insulated: The higher the R Value the less work your cooling unit will have to do.
Walls: Depending on your desired aesthetic you can choose from rock, brick, wood, tile or even Gabian baskets. It is essential that the finish is resistant to humidity.
Floors: The best flooring options are concrete, stone, or tile. Always try to avoid wood or carpet within your cellar. We recommend a 4-10” trim of gravel around the wine shelving. It was often used in old European cellars as a catch for a fallen or dropped bottle. Not only is it functional but it aesthetically works in both modern and old-world design.
Doors: For the best environmental conditions you will want an exterior-grade door with windows. (Why hide custom craftsmanship behind a closed, solid door). We’ve worked with old castle doors, custom stainless, and even bank vault doors and they all work well.
Now, all that is left to decide on is the fun stuff!
